SDG Day

The East Orange School District's, Althea Gibson Academy, held its annual Sustainable Development Goals Day on April 23, 2024. This year featured a “TEDx” style format with a gallery of student inventions – AGAx and Gibson’s Great Ideas. Students at Gibson
Academy have been learning about the
SDGs all year long and today was a
culmination of their efforts. SDG

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations members in 2015, which created seventeen Sustainable Development Goals also known as the Global Goals. At Gibson Academy, students learn about the goals directly and indirectly on a daily basis. Our programs and curriculum supplements address each goal. Special emphasis is placed on SDG 15, Life on Land. Students need to learn about the world and their place in it. Learning about the goals helps them gain insight into critical issues.

Sustainable Development Goals also encourage students to be active participants in the world they live in. In this early childhood environment, we are teaching our students to think about themselves and beyond themselves. It is critically important that our youngsters, all of whom are members of marginalized groups, develop their voices and learn advocacy. They are able to analyze issues that negatively impact their communities and consider solutions for improving life for all of us. SDG

Students worked collaboratively to identify innovative solutions to problems identified by SDG 15. Each year we invite the local and extended school community to view innovative solutions posed to problems identified by Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on Land. “By taking empathy and transforming it into action-based compassion, students are making a difference in their communities and in the world” ("Empathy in action: How teachers prepare future citizens," 2015). The East Orange School District is extremely proud of our scholars and the pronominal work they continue to produce. Kudos to Principal Dr. Renee Richardson and her amazing staff for your continuous leadership.
