6th Annual DEAR

The Elementary Language Arts Department will celebrate National Read Across America Day on
Monday, March 3, 2025 at 9:00am. We invite you to participate in our six annual Drop Everything and
Read Campaign (D.E.A.R).

We are encouraging the entire East Orange community of students, staff, parents and key stakeholders
to embark in ten minutes of uninterrupted reading. Please make sure to capture this moment of reading with photos, videos and social media posts. Independent reading is a cornerstone of academic success and personal development, offering students the opportunity to explore topics of interest and expand their horizons. When students choose their own books and read for pleasure, they strengthen their vocabulary, enhance comprehension skills, and foster a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

Research consistently shows that students who engage in independent reading perform better academically and develop critical thinking skills that are essential for problem-solving and decision-making. Moreover, this practice supports the development of empathy, as students encounter diverse perspectives, cultures, and experiences through literatureEncouraging independent reading also builds habits that benefit students throughout their lives.

Setting aside time for daily reading helps establish discipline and cultivates a sense of curiosity. Whether it’s diving into a gripping novel, exploring a nonfiction topic, or savoring poetry, independent reading helps students find joy in learning and unlocks their potential for lifelong growth. As a district, we are committed to fostering a culture of reading by providing access to diverse, engaging books and creating opportunities for students to explore their passions through literature. Together, we can empower our students to become confident, thoughtful, and informed individuals ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.
