Scholars from the East Orange School District recently showcased their ingenuity and creativity at the Northern Regional Solar Sprint Competition. This exciting STEM challenge, sponsored by the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), encourages middle and high school students to design, build, and race solar-powered cars.
Teams start with a standard solar panel and motor, then unleash their creativity to build the most efficient, aerodynamic, and speedy vehicle possible. Throughout the process, students refine their designs through trial and error, fostering problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of sustainable energy. We are especially grateful to AEOP for providing the basic engineering supplies, enabling students to focus on innovation and problem-solving while constructing their vehicles.
Held at East Orange STEM Academy on February 28, the competition featured teams from Morristown, Marie Thomas Charter School, the East Orange School District, and homeschooled students. Sheila Oliver Academy made its debut in the competition, marking a significant milestone for the school. East Orange STEM Academy emerged victorious, claiming first place in the Senior Solar Sprint and second place in the Junior Solar Sprint.
"The power of the sun is limitless—just like the potential of young minds driven by curiosity and innovation," said Dr. David Mwangi, Supervisor of Science K-12. The winning teams will now advance to the National Competition in Nashville, Kentucky, this June, where they will showcase their engineering skills on a larger stage. The Northern Regional Solar Sprint provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, learn about renewable energy sources and sustainable technologies, experience the thrill of hands-on engineering, and collaborate with peers and develop teamwork skills.
This STEM incentive was sponsored by the Picatinny STEM Office and organized by the East Orange School District Science Department and STEM Academy.
